Measuring Up To the Queen of Beds: A queen size bed is one of the most popular and in demand type of bed since its size is right in between a twin, full or king size bed. It is roomy enough for one adult and can provide sleeping space for two.

Its dimensions make it suitable in most bedrooms, allowing large comfortable sleeping space without taking up too much bed space. The measurements may vary from one maker to the other. It is interesting to note that there are different types of queen size beds according to their measurements:

  • Queen - the best choice for two adults but may be small for some. Measurements are 60”x 80”

  • California Queen – this is longer than the standard Queen by 4 inches. More suitable for adults taller than 5’5”. Its measurements are 60”x84”

  • Expanded Queen – this is 6 inches wider than the standard Queen. Provides more sleeping space (at least 33”) for two adults no taller than 5’5”. Its measurements are 66”x 80”

The popularity of a queen size bed makes it easy to spruce it up with a wide range of beddings. Almost all bed linen are available to fit queen size beds. The key to finding the perfect fit for bed accessories is to know the measurements of your queen size bed and mattress. Make certain that top sheets, duvet covers, bedspreads and comforters have a long enough drop to cover the thickness of the mattress. Below is a list of bed linen in their queen size measurements:

  • Fitted sheets - 60” x 80” this measurement ensures proper fit for queen size beds. This size may apply to mattress pads as well

  • Comforters – 86’x 94” this measurement sometimes apply to both full and queen size beds

  • Down comforters – 90” x 98” this measurement is just a basic guide; some manufacturers make them slightly smaller

  • Blankets – 90’ x 90” this measurement may also apply to both full and queen sizes. There is a lot of variation on blanket sizes from different makers.

  • Duvets – 88” x 88” – this is the standard measurement for a queen size bed although some duvets may be oversized.

  • Pillows – 20” x 30” – this size of pillow may fill a standard pillow case which is 20” x 26 more completely. Use two of these for queen size beds.

  • Bedspreads – “102” x 122” – this is a standard size for queen size beds; some standard queen size bedspreads may not be the correct size for other queen size beds.

As a tip, remember to include the dimensions of your mattress, the size of the pillows, and height of the bed’s legs or the type of your bed frame. Bedspreads look best when they have just the right drop. The bedspread size of “102 x 122” covers a queen size bed with a standard pillow and a 21” drop. Bedspreads are not used on beds with footboards. A coverlet that doesn’t reach the floor is best with this type of bed.

To easily create the look and feel of a bed that’s fit only for queens, you should always remember to pay attention to the sizes of bed linen and other accessories to match your queen size bed measurements. It can’t get any easier than that.
